Jamie & Helena's Lancrigg Wedding in Grasmere | A Rainy Lake District Wedding
As a Lake District wedding photographer, I've learnt one thing over the years, rain does not need to ruin a wedding. It can simply become part of the story.
Jamie and Helena's wedding at Lancrigg in Grasmere was the perfect example of that.
Without a doubt, this was one of the wettest weddings I've photographed this year. From the moment I arrived, the Cumbrian skies had well and truly settled in for the day. Grey clouds, constant rain and mist clinging to the Lakeland fells created a backdrop that was more atmospheric than scenic.
Normally, the views at Lancrigg are breathtaking, but on this occasion they were hidden almost entirely behind the weather. Yet if you asked anyone who was there what they remembered most about the day, the weather probably wouldn't even make the list.
Instead, they'd tell you about the laughter, the incredible atmosphere, and one of the best wedding parties I've seen all year.
A Beautiful Outdoor Ceremony at Lancrigg Despite the Rain
One of the reasons I love photographing weddings at Lancrigg is its stunning setting in the heart of Grasmere. Normally, the lawns are framed by breathtaking views of the surrounding Lake District fells. On Jamie and Helena's wedding day, those famous views were hidden behind mist and rain. Did they change their plans? Not a chance.
With a stretch tent added at the last minute, they were still married outside on the lawns exactly as they'd always imagined. Rain poured around them while family and friends gathered underneath, creating one of the most memorable ceremonies we've photographed.
Why Rain Can Make Your Wedding Photos Even Better
One of the biggest questions couples ask us as Lake District wedding photographers is, "What happens if it rains?" The answer is simple… We embrace it.
Some of my favourite images from Jamie and Helena's wedding simply wouldn't have existed without the weather. The soft light, dramatic skies, umbrellas, and the cosy atmosphere throughout Lancrigg all added so much character to their photographs and wedding film. Rain creates a story that is completely unique to your wedding day.
Jamie and Helena trusted the process, and because they never worried about getting a little wet, we still had a good laugh as the Cumbrian weather did it’s best to ruin the photos, without success.
The Party That Made Everyone Forget the Weather
Even after spending the entire day in the rain, one thing became very clear. This was going to be one incredible evening. I was with Jamie and Helena from morning preparations right through until 11pm, capturing both photography and film, and the celebrations just got better as the day went on. Once the music started, the dance floor exploded into life. It was absolutely bouncing.
Guests barely left the dance floor making the most of every single minute. The energy inside Lancrigg was unbelievable and the atmosphere was everything you could hope for at a Lake District wedding. After one of the wettest days of the year, they ended it with one of the biggest parties I've photographed.
The Weather Doesn't Make a Wedding
As a wedding photographer, I've photographed weddings in blazing sunshine, snow, storms and everything in between. The couples whose weddings stand out the most are never the ones with perfect weather. They're the ones with the best attitude. Jamie and Helena embraced every single moment of their wedding day. They didn't spend their time watching the forecast or worrying about the rain. They focused on each other, celebrated with the people they love, and had the time of their lives.
Looking for a Lancrigg Wedding Photographer?
If you're planning your own Lancrigg wedding, getting married in Grasmere, or looking for a relaxed and natural Lake District wedding photographer, don't let the weather put you off planning an outdoor celebration. The Lake District is famous for its landscapes, but it's also famous for its unpredictable weather and that's all part of its charm.
With the right mindset, a flexible plan and a willingness to embrace whatever the day brings, you'll end up with a wedding that's unforgettable for all the right reasons.
Jamie and Helena's day is proof of that. One of the wettest weddings of the year. One beautifully rain-soaked Lake District wedding. One unforgettable celebration. At the end of the day, the weather only ruins your wedding if you let it.
